01. Jim's "The Fall"
(Smith/Watts)
2:39
(We are new Fall)
799 or one million pounds
The next fork is endless
Fork out - I can't cover
Accused down courts
Endless
The road is locked up
The next bend might lock up
The next fork is endless
Endless outstretched hands
Are the result of all you've given
Close it out just for now
There's a fly way to the south
Road is locked up
The next bend might lock up
7 double 9 or a million pounds for you
Fork out - covered
We are the new Fall and you better have a look cop
(We are the new Fall)
Close it out, close it out
02. Bourgeois Town
(Leadbetter, arr. Smith)
3:41
And your wife
And your settee
Don't wanna be mistreated by neo-bourgeoisie
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois town
Spread the news around
Open newspaper
What do i see
A politician with kids doing the best for me
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois blues
Spread the news around
Get on a bus
Keep head down
A DG gets on sits opposite like a clown
A bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois town
I've got the bourgeois blues
Spread the news around
I've got the bourgeois blues
In a bourgeois town
And i go to park
For fresh air
I look around there's loads of beach bums and men with shaven hair
I've got the bourgeois blues
I've got the bourgeois blues
I'm in a bourgeois town
Spread the news around
I open mail
For letters from friends
Or maybe cheques
All I get is demands from the C.O. Exchequer
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois city
I've got the bourgeois blues
Spread the news around
Get on a train
To get out of town
Sat opposite a politician with his head held down
Walk back streets
To fresh air
I meet a journalist with no money for beer
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois town
I'm in a bourgeois town
Note: Based on The Bourgeois Blues by Leadbelly (incorrectly credited to Robert Johnson on the album sleeve), a 1938 blues classic which tells the story about Leadbelly and his wife visiting Washington DC in 1937 and getting turned away from hotels & restaurants because they were black.
03. Crop-Dust
(Birtwistle/Smith)
5:31
It is cruel and blind
and does not compensate
the brutal fracture
leaves sprout all over
out in the heart of the garden
Your liver is one
Your brain is eight-twelfths of thought off
Your liver is one
Your brain is eight-twelfths of thought off
A quarter of the brain is left
to see it in 25 lines
on your mindset
infra-skunk-structure
The editor bedraggled, stumbled
some hurt, some days with film crew
their equipment strewn on the new development
as the rain tumbles down over the riverside complex
still uncovering up the ominous thunder of the hail
[backing vox: Deep in the sounds of your mind
you feel there's lost time but there's no ... etc. through next verse]
'chanted by skyscraper tall
Skyscraper tall
World War One soldiers in greatcoats and picklehaube [1]
Joined by the old singer from Manchester
"in the 1990s" [in odd "drunk" voice]
Brutal fracture
leaves sprout in the heart of the garden
A quarter of brain is left to see it in 25 lines
25 lines
Note: [1] picklehaube was German slang for the early helmets used in WWI - Picklespear
04. My Ex-Classmates' Kids
(Smith/Blaney)
4:50
Ahhhhaaaaaaaaghhhh
Cry for them
5 days per week
I cry for me, three days at least
I cry for me, I cry for thee
On radio
Politburo sucker
On cooking show
On cooking show
Ahhhhaaaaaaaaghhhh
My ex-classmates' kids
Pressure under and over
Pressure over the skips
Over price adverts
Broken down laptops
Ahhhhaaaaaaaaghhhh
My ex-classmates' kids
Talking show not end
They cheat the kids
I cry for them
I cry for me, I cry for thee
Ahhhhaaaaaaaaghhhh
My ex-classmates' kids
Talking show never end
To our populous
I cry them
I cry for me, I cry for thee
Ahhhhaaaaaaaaghhhh
My ex-classmates' kids
No end it it
Smell - dry twigs
Ahhhhaaaaaaaaghhhh
My ex-classmates' kids
Up your nose
Aftershave like little twigs...

06. Gotta See Jane
(R Dean Taylor)
2:23
Red light
Green light
Going through the dark night
Going through the pouring rain
I gotta see Jane
Window wiper splishing splashing
Calling out her name
I gotta see Jane
I left her arms to find my way
To plough my place in a world outside
I could not survive
Was deaf and blind [?]
The constant chase
To win the race
It's not a part of me
I've gotta find what I left behind
Red light
Green light
Going through the dark night
Steering through the pouring rain
I gotta see Jane
Byway, highway
Going up the highway
Going on a world insane
I gotta see Jane
A town of steel
That did not feel
That is surreal
It's not a part of me
I've gotta find what I left behind
The constant chase
To win the race
The frantic pace
It's not a part of me
I've gotta find what I left behind
And I can feel her arms around me
Reminded me of yesterday
When love & happiness were mine
I gotta see Jane
I gotta see Jane
Uh
I gotta see Jane
Yeah
I gotta see Jane
This is a barbaric crisis [? That's an apparant crisis]
Give yourself up [?]

07. Ibis-Afro Man
(Smith/Watts/Pop)
9:31
I ate a monkey breakfast
I eat a skunk for lunch
I living in the bush
I eat with my fingers
I don't use no knife or fork
cause I live in the jungle
I live in jungle
I'm living in the bush
I'm living in the bush
I eating with my fingers
I use no fork or knife
I use no fork or knife
I know elephants and lions
I'm an elephant hotel man
And I eat what I can
I eat what I can
I eat a monkey for breakfast
I ate a skunk for lunch
I'm living in the bush in a hotel
I'm an Ibis hotel man
I'm eating with my fingers
I use no fork or knife
Sometimes things double too slow
And the sky, the sky tremble above me
It looks so great
I eat with my fingers
I use no fork or knife
All I want's a hotel to climb
I'm an Ibis hotel man
I'm living in the bush
A round return, I'm a man
And I do what I can
And I do what I can
I ate a monkey for lunch
And for breakfast I have a snack
I eat a skunk for lunch
I'm an Ibis hotel man
I do elephants and lions
To the children that I provide
I'm an african man
I'm living in a ..
I'm an african man
And I do what I can
I got three minutes
I eat a lunch
I put it on the bill
I eat a skunk, I eat a skunk
[animal screaching]
[lyrics from Race With The Devil]
...my throat was dry
I look around, I looked around
And I always did
Uh uh uh [as in A Past Gone Mad]
I got christmas island
And join the troops
I got christmas island
I'm gonna join a cruise [? draw a truce / call a truce / join the troops]
When you look around, I sit down
A mission
I'm an average computer man
I do what I can, I do what I can
I do what I can, I do what I can, I do what I can
And here's one of my friends
He's gonna sing one of the old songs from trigger hap...
"Hello London, you lucky lucky people - Mark E" [sung by Ed Blaney]
I was walking down the street again and again
[mobile phone interference]
[outro of Birthday for 1 second with crowd cheering]
08. The Acute
(Smith/Fanning)
3:19
Do I look like I have on my forehead
Do I look like I have on my face
Complain here
And rip me off
My advice to you is this
Keep your pen with a cap
Don't press your finger in the wrong socket
And to sum up
The motive of this film is
Keep your cap on your pen
Keep your dick in your pants
Do I look like
I have...
Written on my forehead
On my forehead
On my forehead
Acute
Acute
09. Hollow Mind
(Smith/Blaney)
3:33
Silent view, hollow mind
Where you going?
Are you a throughbred kind?
Walk outside, take a look
Kick through the rubbish
'Cause you dont give a damn
Had enough, you seen it all
All the faces
How come you're so tough?
Silent views, hollow mind
Silent views, hollow mind
You had it all
You've seen all - that
But I reply
You don't know fuck
Silent views, hollow mind
How come pieces have come sore
How come so sore
How come so sore
Silent view, hollow mind
10. Reprise: Jane - Prof Mick - Ey Bastardo
(Birtwistle/Blaney)
7:02
And he has to put up with Brian [1]
He has, uh, to put up with, uh, Mark
He is a bastardo
Spen is a bastardo [2]
Spen is a bastardo
When Spencer walks down the street [2]
He say where's that white M... BMW
He's parked it in the car park
He's parked it in the car park
He wants to go to his home
He is a bastardo
Spen is a bastardo
And Steve, he has gone bald [3]
Because he has to put up with...
right...
Spen is a bastardo
Spen is a bastardo
He wants to rush home
He is a bastardo
Spen is a bastardo
Everywhere he go the people say
Spen is a bastardo
He love Brian [1]
He love Steve the mixer [3]
He love everybody
He doesn't like Ed though [4]
Ed is a...
Ed is [deliberately garbled]
Spen is a bastardo
Spen is a bastardo
Right... we're gonna go for it...
Second bit now
Ah Ur
I gotta find Jane
Ur
I gotta find Jane
A world of pain
It was surreal
A place of stone
It's not a part of me
Within hours and days
I was running scared
Oh
I gotta see Jane
Oh
I gotta see Jane
Red light
Green light
Going through the car parks
Soaring through the town and rain
I gotta see Jane
Window wiper splishes splashes
Tearing down the highway
I gotta see Jane
A town of steel
That is surreal
That cannot feel
It's not a part of me
I've gotta find what I left behind
Carers, cursors, [?], censors, [?]
Call out my name
I gotta see Jane
A town of steel
That could not feel
It was surreal
It's not a part of me
I've gotta find what I left behind
Woh
I gotta see Jane
Woh
I gotta see Jane
To find a way
To leave the world
Outside is cold
And left my heart inside
I've gotta find what I left behind
But out of there
I was running scared
Red light
Green light
Going through the dark night
Going through the town and rain
I gotta see Jane
Window wiper splishing splashing
Going up the high insane
I gotta see Jane
I left her arms
To [?] reach
It's [?]
It's not a part of me
I've gotta find what I left behind

Recording info & notes
|
Recorded at Noise Box, Manchester mid 2001.
The CD was sold at live gigs from 8 October 2001, about a month before its official release. Some early pressings of the CD incorrectly had tracks 4 and 5 reversed on the disc. The LP version was a limited numbered edition picture disc of 1,000 copies. The composition credit for track 2 was incorrectly given as R Johnson on the cover. A portion of track 7 is a live recording from the Mean Fiddler, London on 23 April 2001 - it includes Julia Nagle on keyboards (not credited on the album).
