01. Green Eyed Loco-Man
(Smith/Watts)
3:47
To wear Chanel, you have to shave first
And be a man; where do you stand, huh?
A green eyed loco-man
A green eyed loco-man
Where you're standing, I don't see you
Your reflected green eyes take two foot off you
I'm moving fast but you are tight
Your fractured eyes force me through the night
A green eyed loco-man
A green eyed loco-man
G-g-g-g-green eyed loco-man
Green eyed loco-man
And riddle me this, who are you?
Through a helmet your hair grows right to the ground
That will soon enfold you
Green eyed loco-man where do you stand, huh?
A green eyed loco-man
A green eyed loco-man
With a rabbit's skull on my right
You may be shocked but I'll make you late
For your greedy past, cold on a plate
Loco man
02. Mountain Energei
(Smith/Milner)
3:22
Mr Blairstowe and Mr Partridge
They said to me
To get a mortgage
You need an income lid
I thought it was free
Dolly Parton and Lord Byron
They said patriotism is the last refuge
But now its me
And water's flowing down the mountain
But a tree is blocking the water flowing
So I went fishing
A note from a fish said:
Dear dope, if you wanna catch us
You need a rod and a line
Signed the fish
Water is flowing down the mountain
But a tree is blocking the water flowing
Went to the car rental
They said to me
You need a log book and licence, son
Water's flowing down the mountain
But a tree is blocking the water coming
Mountain energei
And water's flowing down the mountain
03. Theme From Sparta F.C.
(Smith/Pritchard/Watts)
3:43
Come on I will show you how I will change
When you give me something to slaughter
Shepherd boy (Hey!)
Everybody sing (Hey!)
Better act quick (Hey!)
Be my toy
Come on have a bet
We live on blood
We are Sparta F.C.
[background vocal by Elena] [1]
I don't have a jack knife it went up the hill
I don't know if i'll get it back
But by hook or by crook I will
Hey! Hey!
Be my toy
Come on have a bet
We live on blood
We are Sparta F.C.
Hey! Hey!
We have to pay for everything (Hey!)
But some things are for free (Hey!)
We live on blood (Hey!)
We are Sparta F.C. (Hey!)
English Chelsea fan this is your last game (Hey!)
We're not Galatasary We're Sparta F.C. (Hey!)
[background vocal by Elena] [1]
And take your fleecy jumper you won't need it anymore
It is in the car boot moving away
'Cause where you are going clothes won't help
Stay at home with TV set
Be my toy
Come on have a bet
We live on blood
We are Sparta F.C.
Cheap English man in the paper shop
You mug old women in your bobble hat
Better go spot a place to rest
No more ground boutique at match in Chelsea
We are Sparta F.C.
Come on have a bet
We live on blood
We are Sparta F.C.
Hey! Hey!
Shepherd boy (Hey!)
Everybody sing (Hey!)
Better act quick (Hey!)
Be my toy (Hey!)
Come on have a bet (Hey!)
So I can win (Hey!)
This is not a poem (Hey!)
For the bin (Hey!)
I don't have a jack knife (Hey!)
It went up the hill (Hey!)
I don't know if I'll get it back (Hey!)
By hook or crook I will (Hey!)
English Chelsea fan (Hey!)
This is your last game (Hey!)
We're not Galatasary (Hey!)
We're Sparta F.C. (Hey!)
Sparta!
Note: [1] Elena's backing vocals are in Greek.
04. Contraflow
(Smith/Watts)
4:06
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
Go out little tyke
And meet at crossroads
Early morning
The sick hill near Buxton
Stock reload
I gotta do it
Prefixed about it
Goin' to meet Jim
With a roll
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
As a retard i had to do it
I hate the dole
Them keys won't fit
Keys won't fit (the keys won't fit)
The keys won't fit in the socket
Or the controls
Stuck like grids on Pennine mud
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
(Backing vocals: walk snake back pass)
Walk snake back
Walk snake back
walk snake pass
walk snake bank
Go out little tyke
Early morning
Sick hills near Buxton
Suffering
I gotta do it
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
I hate the countryside so much
I hate the contraflow so much
(Repeats to fade)
05. Last Commands Of Xyralothep Via M.E.S.
(Smith/Milner)
3:30
Locus
Beware characters connected with car adverts [1]
Real, assumed or imaginary
The vocal testament of M.E.S.
Coming from the little town of Speck Marsden
1. Cash - the eternal fork out
To keep everything normal is well beyond the capacity
All monies will try and escape thee
Beware of thy lazy right hand
This is the focal of M.E.S. locus and Xyralothep
Avoid respectable television and respectable newspapers
They have neither the talent of art
Nor the instinctive snout of the media
2. Deploreth thy real god
He mutters incomprehensibly
Still on job one
With alloys
The calibrator
In a cave not yet invented or constructed
This is your vessel M.E.S.
From he to you
This one M.E.S. procured
Mountain's waters blocked by dormant tree
See later on this LP [2]
6. Avoid fat aggressive men and handsome aggressive men
In conflict they disappear overnight with bad backs
7. Cod-science/cod-psychology is to be avoided
But do not make your enig-noise public
As it will bring the wrath of the drude quarters [3]
Notes:
[1] Mark was apparently short-changed when Touch Sensitive was used for the Vauxhall Corsa advertisement.
[2] In fact it's earlier on the LP - the reference is to Mountain Energei.
[3] This could be a response to Julian Cope (who refers to himself as the arch-drude), who commented on his website: "...you hear that new Fall record and it's just more embittered semi-mystical coded fraudulent ramblings about NOTHING nothing NOTHING." (editor's interpretation, which may well be completely wrong!)
06. Open The Boxoctosis #2
(Smith/Watts)
3:46
Land of bounty
[Band backing vox on this part throughout song:]
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
I opened the box
Of imperial stuff
And to my surprise
I found twenty five warriors
Warriors
With shields
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
I opened the box
Of imperial love
And to my surprise
I found twenty five warriors
With ribbons
Land of tolerance
Saints like me
With good word for everybody
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
Everybody
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
I found imperious ribbons
I opened the box
And to my surprise
I found love
Imperial stuff
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!
I opened the box
I was well perplexed
I opened the box
It was orthodox
It was looking at me
With imperial love
I opened the box
I opened the b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b...
Land of return to seat
Land of bounty
Land of dope cake
I opened the box
[Backing vox repeated behind MES:
Open the box, open the box
Open the goddam box!]
I opened the box
And to my surprise
I found twenty five warriors
At the bottom
At the bottom
At the bottom
At the bottom
07. Janet, Johnny + James
(Pritchard/Smith)
4:15
What if the world crashed in
Refolding behind your eyelids
Cracked your mind
Cracked your mind
Janet and Johnny and James
Crash your mind
Behind your eyelids
The people behind you
With nepotism
Explodes
All that rubbish you create
In the [lock]
Suddenly [cranking]
Nepotism
Janet and Johnny and James
Janet and Johnny and James
Dearest Lord, hear me now
Janet and Johnny
Coming over the mountain
From New Guinea
They see the star
From you, our creator
A startling vision of a future that didn't happen
Ian and Eric
The stars trace
Over Janet and Judy
And James
And Susan and Johnny
The skies reflect
Dear Lord, help them in their abject search
From Guineas and the bearded man
From the hills
Never seen again
Janet and Johnny and James
Reflect on your life
08. The Past #2
(Smith/Watts)
2:20
What you put in the mouth
A lot of things that weren't there
Pre-assumptions don't bring a harvest
But I love the justice and [?] melancholy
[Band vox:]
Don't speak, just think
Look down, shut up
Don't frown, you fucked up
The truth, the lie |
[MES vox:]
The feeling that makes you intelligence specie
Truth, the invention of a layer
|
Captivated in ha-ha juice injustice
The lie-down liar strikes back
Your neck is growing, oh
Only humans carry their past around
Their past around
Implode into realit...
[Band vox:]
Don't drive, don't sleep
Don't laugh, just vibe
The blood, the good
The bad, ha ha |
[MES vox:]
Collaging your memories fast
I'll be good when I'm still but while meek
|
Pictureless memories dissolve in a panic
Motif: the one can see oneself
In the mould
It can be different
With all boys and girls dead
2. The one can see oneself in the world
It can be different
[Band vox:]
Don't speak, just think
Look down, shut up
Don't frown, you fucked up
The truth, the lie |
[MES vox:]
And the fatal, and the up
And the down
And the fatal, and the up
And the down
|
Boys and the dead too are armed
Like the abdominisers and private investigators
Looking for a cheap coffee
Hunting out limeys
Or I'm just buying a drink
Wanna be my one, laddie?
09. Loop41 'Houston
(Hazelwood)
3:28
Well it's lonesome in this old town
Everybody puts me down
I'm a face without a name
Just walking in the rain
Goin' back to Houston, Houston, Houston
I got holes in both of my shoes
I'm a walking case of bad news
I saw a ten pound note yesterday
But the wind just blew it away
Goin' back to Houston, Houston, Houston
I haven't eaten in about a week
I'm so hungry I cannot speak
Nobody calls me friend
It's bad the shape I'm in
Goin' back to Houston, Houston, Houston
I'm goin' to Houston, Houston, Houston
I got a friend who's waiting for me
It's a pain but it sets me free
I need a long regular bed
And a feather pillow for my head
I'm headin' back to Houston, Houston, Houston
Well it's lonely in this old town
Everybody puts me down
It's a city that doesn't speak
I'm glad I'm heading out
Back to Houston, Houston, Houston
Houston, Houston, Houston
Houston, Houston, Houston
Houston, Houston, Houston
Houston, Houston, Houst...
[backing vocals throughout: hip hip hip]
10. Mike's Love Xexagon
(Smith/Watts)
4:59
Studio was a hexagon
Old men were sat on one side [? old member sat on one side]
Opposite three bored triplets
I stood in the middle
Fumbling with two tin packets
Listen while I tell this tale of woe
The worm in the bacon of BB [1]
His name was Love
But how were they to know
Mike's gift was only poison
When I died - love was all around
When I died - love was in the air
When I died - love was everywhere
When I died - [? captain, aye, peculiar wind]
So hoist the cats away
And the mouse he did play
The plots came thick and fast
Satanic meditations, shadow emissions
So hoist his music on the mast
So look at the worm in the bacon
Good vibrations, man
When I died - love was all around
When I died - love was in the air
When I died - love was everywhere
When I died - [? captain, aye, peculiar wind]
Well then I died
Turned the beat to the brink
To post his name high
Thick and fast on the mast
Sail is all broken
The story of love
The story of love
The story of love
When I died - love was all around
When I died - love was in the air
When I died - love was everywhere
When I died - [? captain, aye, peculiar wind]
When I died - love was all around
When I died - love was in the air
When I died - love was everywhere
When I died - [? captain, aye, peculiar wind]
Note: [1] BB = Beach Boys. The three following lines refer to Mike Love, the often unloved member of the Beach Boys, who ended up suing the other group members and now owns the rights to the band's name. Other Beach Boys references in the lyrics include "good vibrations", the name of their most famous number one single, and the words "hoist, mast & sail" which refer to their song Sloop John B. The vocal harmonies are also very reminiscent of the Beach Boys sound.
11. Proteinprotection
(Smith/Watts/Milner/Pritchard)
3:19
No protein protection in self-enforced exile
Does everybody talk about the same things
All the time
All the time
Doppel thingy
The chimney is the chief
Can kick and jump out of the mess
Out of the masses
Any time
Any time
Any time
There is something to believe in
No Hubbard [1] or husbandry or freedom or the holy terror
Abstraction
You know it's the smell
A goodbye to people, sincere
In a Billy backhand
Come on! Hey! Way!
Out of the masses
Any time
Any time
Any time
No protein protection or self-enforced exile
Does everybody talk about the same thing
All the time
Doppelganged
The chimney and the chief
Can kick and jump out of the mess
Out of the masses
Any time
Any time
Any time
There is something to believe in
No Hubbard [1] or husband or husband or freedom
Or the holy terror
Abstraction
You know it's the smell
A goodbye to people, sincere
In a rock back Billy rut
Out of the masses
Any time
Any time
Any time
Out of the masses
Any time
Any time
Any time
Note: [1] This may be a reference to L Ron Hubbard, the founder of scientology.
12. Recovery Kit
(Smith/Pritchard)
3:58
How can you have
Your house and your land
How can you leave
How can you leave
Your new land guilded
What I gave I bought
How can you leave
Your house
How can you leave
Your money and guilded land
Your head explodes
If you try on it
You go out try, it is yours
There were three
At the old hall door
Complete recovery kit
The four parts of it
It's always free
What can I...
Your head explodes
Ah...
What I gave I bought
Was late that night it came on
It was quite steep in the middle
Speak speak speak
Come out the exit
Complete recovery kit
Four parts of it
If you want
It's free
You open it

Recording info & notes
|
Recorded at Gracielands Studio, Rochdale late 2002-mid 2003.
Some early pressings of the CD incorrectly had track 6 after track 9. The LP was a limited edition of 1,000 copies. The album was originally planned for release in April 2003 under the title Country On The Click. However, after the original mix leaked on the internet, it was partially re-recorded, remixed and retitled. The CD spines and inside cover still show the original title & the CD label uses the word "album" rather than "LP". The promo CD carried the warning: "For promotional use only - anyone abusing this will have Mark E Smith to contend with and may God have mercy on your soul!!!".
