Benefit gig for striking Liverpool Council workers, hence the short set. New Order and The Smiths also on the bill. Thanks to Ashley Haynes for the ticket.

From neworderonline.com:

tickets for this gig were like gold dust... the line up explains why... the fall.. new order... and the smiths..... never had such a line up been seen... this was a council benefit for liverpool entitled " from manchester with love "... the compere for the night was derek hatton...

for some reason new order came on first... they played a very short set... and seemed slightly disinterested in the proceedings...

the encore for the gig was a mixture of all three bands playing maggies farm.. .the only rep from new order was hookie...

"i don't know if i told you the story behind this fall show at croydon. anyway, i wento with a great frien and his wife, both brazilians.
"hey, that guy on the other side of the isn't the fall singer?" well, as soon as i recognize him we jumped into his direction. mark was with a blonde guy who was a keyboard player and producer... i forgot his name! we approached saying that we were there to see them at the concert, bla bla bla.
and mark said - "let's have some beers"!
we went to a pub, drank some pints, i didn't understand a single word from him...
baut we talked a lot!!!
ha ha ha...
my friend sais that mark told us that only reason to stop him to do whatever was the brazilian soup opera "escrava isaura"!!!
suddenly he said - "time to go"
he paid the bill and we left the pub straight to the underground...
as we headed the front door, a huge security man asker for the tickets...
mark put his arms around us and shouted - WE ARE THE FALL!
and we 5 got into the small palace!!!!
ha ha ha...
i saw the band more two times after this one - hammersmith odeon & finsbury park tent!
they played in rio in a dance event together with michael clark but i was in london!
cheers

Plus Simon Rogers, at least at some gigs until mid/late 1987. He didn't play on the October 1986 dates in Austria or the USA; did he play on the UK tour later that year?

early October 1986   Ipswich

No tape exists? A "rehearsal" gig for the new keyboard player, Marcia Schofield. Mark had lent her a copy of Bend Sinister a couple of days before. "It was packed and I had to walk onstage with all these scraps of paper with notes written down. The sound-check was the first time I'd played with these guys! Terrifying! For the encore they did two songs I'd never even heard before! Talk about baptism by fire. Mark always said, 'That was your best gig with us.' " (Bitch Mental #1, February 1990)

Friday, 24 October 1986   Anthrax, Norwalk, Connecticut

flyer flyer

Brix recounts her worst Fall gig for the NME in the clipping on the right (29 April 1989). Thanks to Dannyno for the flyers and this excerpt from "Everybody’s Scene: the story of Connecticut’s Anthrax Club” by Chris Daily (2009):

“The news started to spread quickly that the Anthrax club was back open and ready for bands. Brian and Shaun got word that the English punk band, The Fall, was on tour and coming through the area.  The Fall was one of their favourite groups. In an attempt to figure out the band’s booking agent, they called a club where the band was scheduled to play and asked a few questions. October 24, just two weeks after opening the doors, The Fall was on the schedule to play.

The Fall had a steep guarantee and a rider that required them to be paid 50 percent up-front along with a long list of food and beverages.  With money as tight as it was, they weren’t sure they would be able to meet the band’s demands and bring the gig to fruition.   However, Chip Moody, longtime friend and Vatican Commands/CIA drummer, and even bigger fan of The Fall, was more than eager to lend them the money to get the band there.  It was a gamble to take on such an expensive tour right away.  The thought was that it would be a great show to get the word out about the new larger location.  The door was priced at 10 dollars and luckily almost 300 patrons paid to come in.  The gamble paid off.

William “Bill” Knapp, the club’s long time soundman remembers the show, “The Fall came in, and immediately Mark E. Smith is pissed.  He’s like, ‘this won’t do.  This just won’t do.’  I was like, ‘well, this is what we’ve got.’  I said, ‘we’ve got a 16-channel board and two monitor mixes. This is it.’   He leaves and then comes back to me and he’s even angrier.  He’s not a very tall guy but he’s bumping me on the chest.  He goes ‘I’ve had just about enough from you young man!’  I was like, ‘dude, what are you talking about?’  He comes back, does it again: tap, tap, tap and says ‘I’ve had just about enough from you old-timer’ and I was like, oh man, this is going to be a night.  And it was.   It was constant complaints and Mark E. Smith got so drunk.  So it was an interesting night.”  The bass player proceeded to blow two opening bands’ back line before realizing it was his bass that was the cause.  It was a nightmare gig, off to a rocky start.”

Another attendee, Richard Wittman, recalls a different ending: "I remember it being every bit as chaotic as in the two descriptions on the gigography, the one thing they don't mention - and I would swear on my memory of this - the gig ended quite early on when someone threw a bottle onstage that hit the band, and Mark just stopped the show and walked everyone offstage. Brix's account talks about getting beat up after "finishing the set" with the "boys back on stage" but I'm quite sure that's not how it went down. (I also remember that we had to wait a very long time for the band to come on in the first place.)

"An almighty, authoritative power grips a remarkable cross-section of age, race, sex and style, all of whom wait, ensnared, for an answer to the appeal. Smith merely yelps, sneers and leers. He crouches, microphone locked between his knees, giving nothing away. It is an arrogant presence, completely dismissive of his audience. There is no obligation to say something that might sum it all up. ... I love them because they’re awkward, they’re unorthodox, and they’re obnoxiously defiant. The thrill of disorder stops with The Fall, its most bizarre champions." (Will Smith, "The Fall: Walthamstow Town Hall, London", Melody Maker, 15 November 1986, p. 19)

Thanks to Mark Hex for the advert and Neil Clarke for the poster. Mark kept the review from the Independent and it was consigned to Omega Auctions by his family in June 2022.

The gig was cancelled on 11 November following Johnny Marr's serious car crash. The rescheduled gig took place at the Brixton Academy on 12 December 1986, but without The Fall, who were already booked for Hey! Luciani performances. Thanks to the Manchester District Music Archive for the clippings.

poster review

Thanks to John Quarmby for the review, from the university newspaper "The Warwick Boar".

Tim Jauncey: Can't remember all the set, but know it definitely included Shoulder Pads / Guest Informant / U.S. 80s-90s / Living too Late / Mr. Pharmacist / Hot Aftershave Bop / R.O.D. / Hey! Luciani / Lucifer over Lancashire / Gross Chapel-GB Grenadiers. Encore was Bournemouth Runner.

Interesting anecdote here was that the support band, The Beloved, had their 6-string bass nicked at Brighton the night before (they didn't own a 4-string), and they used Steve Hanley's bass to play their set, having to select only songs that didn't contain any high bass notes !!

(Note: I previously had Dktr. Faustus / Hot Aftershave Bop / Gut of the Quantifier / Living Too Late / U.S. 80s-90s / Gross Chapel-G.B. Grenadiers / Mr. Pharmacist / L.A. for this gig, which was wrong, being the partial set for the Huddersfield gig on 19 November.)

With many thanks indeed to Pete Conkerton, here's a transcript of the play.

Complete dates of performance (all at Riverside): December 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Thanks to Andrew for the second flyer and ticket, and to Lee McFadden for the stage directions. Lee writes

"I don't know whether this happened every night or just the night I went...but I remember MES writing on this sheet of paper - passed it over to Steve Hanley who was dressed in some strange papal uniform - who passed it on to an actor speaking a monologue. The actor theatrically described the whole happening as rubbish - screwed up the paper and threw it in a bin - and the scene ended. As the next scene began the actor brought the bin into the audience - and offered the screwed up sheet to my friend next to me. I was more of a Fall fan than my friend - so he immediately donated it to me - and that's what you see. Part of the scene I've just described is accounted for on the sheet above."
