Fall News - 17 October 1999

The Fall play London Dingwalls on 20 October. It doesn't look like there'll be a Manchester date.

MES will appear on GLR, Wed 20th between 2-4 pm.

Spot the mistake in the last news page:

"TBLY # 17 is out
....[NB, not many extra issues are printed - 17 is sold out]"

I meant, of course, that TBLY #16 is sold out. Copies of #17 still very much available.

Colin Kerr:

From the 10th anniversary Stone Roses reissue thing.

"Bloody Roses man! I always felt sorry for them because of all the 'Madchester' crap. I hated it. I got out and moved to Edinburgh when all that was going on because it was just embarressing. Lads I'd known for fifteen years suddenly prancing about in the Hacienda! And the Stone Roses were never really about that, it just happened around didn't it? All that fucking flares shit. It was hilarious, really. But I liked the Roses. They were more real than a lot of things and people understood that. People were sick of the likes of Morrissey going on and on about bloody Salford Lads Club and all that. Morrissey doesn't know Salford from his fucking arse....does he? No. The Roses were alright"
Mark E Smith

Al:

In today's Guardian, a piece on rock lyrics as poetry:

"Nor is rhythm the only poetic strategy that song lyrics share; for instance the creation of semi-penetrable symbolic worlds (the reason Mark E Smith of The Fall gets compared to Blake)..."

--

The fall are in Q again, at the bottom of the "who's hot and who's not" barometer thing, becuase of Smith sacking the drummer, fighting with Nev etc.

--

In a searingly critical condemnation of the Fall's Mark E Smith, Julian Cope had this to say in today's edition of the Guardian:

"My problem with someone like Mark E Smith is that he's fastidious to his trip and he's totally true on a 1977 level but the goalposts have changed so many times since then that to me the mere fact that he's still allowed himself to be in that position...well he's quite lucky really."
