Brian Turner recorded an interview with Brix in London recently, and it aired yesterday on his show on WFMU. Show is archived here, and I was pleased to hear my recording of the WFNX broadcast of the Boston Channel gig (May 12, 1988) is still making the rounds. A GREAT gig.

There's an eight-page feature on The Fall in the October 2016 Mojo confirming that Elena and the group have parted ways.

MES says: "She's resigned. She was very frustrated with it. She's got a very German head on her and sometimes you've got to look at it objectively."

Also mentions "The Fall Singles 1978-2016", a 7xCD box set slated for November.

bear

Thanks to Chris Hill for photographing his new teddy bear, given to him by a friend who "Freakishly found it in the woods. True fact. A local artist had made loads of them for a teddy bears picnic at an open house thing for the Brighton Fringe. Not all MES, sadly but different public figures. Found yours sat next to Michael Evis bear which obviously was a mistake. Big mistake. They weren't really for sale, being art and all but had to get MES the hell out of there."

Of course that Twitter account was fake and shut down by @therealMES.

Alan

Awful news from Manchester: Alan Wise, impresario extraordinaire, died last night in his sleep, "of a broken heart" a friend says—his daughter Natasha killed herself three months ago. Alan had tried to get the NHS to take her depression seriously to no avail.

Alan was a friend of the Fall news and his communiques during his time as Fall promoter were much enjoyed. RIP.

Those with good memories may recall this Manchester Evening News article about Cornerhouse's plans for its new space and one of its commissions: "Jan St Werner’s Molecular Hypnotics - a sound and light show that features the voice of the legendary frontman of Manchester band The Fall, Mark E. Smith."

WDR has broadcast the audio component of "Molocular Meditation"; it starts at 29m50s on this page.

brix

On Friday, 13 May, Brix & The Extricated play The Ruby Lounge in Manchester at the launch party for Brix's book, "The Rise, The Fall, and The Rise."

update 31 March: Having read a copy of the proof (there are dozens upon dozens of typos to fix, Faber!), I think it's safe to saythat MES won't be particularly happy with Brix's book. I'd heard many of the Fall-related stories before, but there are a couple of new ones and familiar ones elaborated upon (Hotel Bloedel, Disneyland, Saffron, The Brotherhood at Roskilde, Motherwell, etc.)

Brix has led an eventful, often traumatic life (not only during her years with MES/The Fall), and I'm glad she's found some peace and happiness now.

update 3 April: Brix discusses her book with Justin Roberts on The Ransom Note.

update 16 April: Review in the Telegraph by Lewis Jones with previously unseen photos, including the Mr & Mrs Smith with small monkey.

update May 9: There's been a fair amout of press about Brix's book in the UK. And I'm happy to report that the final product has fixed almost all of the typos and added some previously unseen photographs. Reviews on the forum.

Daniel Higgs:

Really excellent show, though a bit too short!

No Eleni for some reason... Keyboards were up, MES doodled on them a tiny bit.

This was my second Fall show, first was Tel-Aviv 5 years ago. Enjoyed this one more - MES was lucid and sharp, the band was in great form, and the material they're playing these days is top notch.

Crowd much smaller than last time, though, possibly due to the promotor who apparently didn't do much to get word out til the last minute...

(Sorry for the blurry pic, some girl grabbed the list and I had a split second to photo...)
